Question: Asking a question on behalf of my dude. He has a great head of dark brown thick wavy hair. Ever since he was young his scalp gets extremely dry and flaky in the winter and Neutrogena T-gel shampoo has been the only thing that relieves it. Apparently they changed their formula and his scalp is super dry and he said it seems like he is losing a ton more hair than normal. Can a dry scalp accelerate or cause hair loss? Any suggestions? He tries not to wash every day but when he works out (which is a lot) it’s kind of necessary…..
Answer: It’s really hard to say what is causing your man’s hair loss. Is there thinning in his family? Genetics seem to be the most frequent cause. While it’s unlikely that dandruff shampoos or the dry scalp itself are causing hair loss, many experts believe it’s most effective to alternate dandruff shampoos. The different types of treatment shampoos are listed in this post.
If you are confident the flaking is a result of dry scalp, I would recommend scalp treatments and dry brushing to stimulate oils. We have some wonderful moisturizing treatments at the salon or you can DIY it at home with some olive oil. Please refer to my post on Combating Winter Dryness for more tips on keeping hair and scalp healthy through the season.
If your boyfriend is really worried about his hair loss, I urge him to discuss it with his doctor. I have clients who have had wonderful results with Rogaine and other prescription treatments. Many stylists also recommend pre-natal vitamins. However, my friend who is a physician’s assistant tells me your really only need certain vitamins and minerals. A good hair-specific formula like this one could be worth a try.
